Opinions on pinky toe (broken or sprained?)?

Thank author of this post/commentA long while back, I broke my pinky toe. It wasn't directly the toe but the metatarsal shaft I think. Well, I'm having a similar pain in the same area after an injury of sorts. The thing is that it's not bruised, nor swollen, and I am able to stand and walk on it, it just has some of the same pain. I remember my doctor telling me there was nothing really he could really do about it other than the R.I.C.E. method, taping them, and he gave me a flat orthopedic shoe to wear. I've been doing all of the above for the time being. Also the pain didn't start until the morning after the injury happened, because I took my dog for an hour and a half long walk right after it had happened. Does this sound like a break or just a sprain? If it's only a sprain, I'm not wasting my money visiting the doctor. Oh well.
